The Director of Math will support school-based staff in implementing Legends&rsquo; existing academic programs while simultaneously reimagining and strengthening math programming, instructional resources, and professional development systems. This leader will also oversee the implementation of OWL (Ongoing Work-Based Learning), Legends&rsquo; school-based professional development model.
In partnership with school leadership, the Director of Math will advance STEM integration and build relationships with external organizations, institutions of higher education, nonprofit partners, and professional networks to enhance student learning opportunities.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Curriculum & Instruction

Lead the development, refinement, and implementation of a rigorous, standards-aligned K&ndash;8 mathematics curriculum aligned to the Common Core State Standards.
Ensure high-fidelity implementation of Eureka Math, Illustrative Math, and other adopted curricular resources.
Establish clear criteria and frameworks for high-quality math instruction that prepare students for college, career, and life.
Support vertical alignment across grade levels to ensure coherence and acceleration of student learning.

Data & Assessment

Lead schoolwide use of i-Ready Math and other formative and summative assessment tools to monitor student growth and mastery.
Analyze assessment data to identify trends, achievement gaps, and instructional priorities.
Develop and implement data cycles that support teachers and leaders in making real-time instructional adjustments.
Present actionable data insights to senior leadership and key stakeholder groups.

Professional Learning & Coaching

Design and deliver high-impact professional development aligned to adult learning theory and instructional best practices.
Provide coaching, modeling, co-planning, and co-teaching support to improve instructional effectiveness.
Facilitate train-the-trainer sessions and ensure sustainability of professional learning systems.
Assess teacher and leader needs, including in dual language and extended year programs, and develop targeted learning opportunities.
Oversee the implementation of OWL (Ongoing Work-Based Learning) as Legends embedded professional development model.

Enrichment & Intervention

Develop and oversee math intervention systems to support struggling learners and close achievement gaps.
Collaborate with school leaders to implement enrichment opportunities that challenge advanced learners.
Ensure intervention programming is data-driven and aligned to core instruction.

Leadership & Strategic Planning

Develop detailed implementation timelines for key initiatives and monitor progress toward goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Curriculum & Instruction

Lead the development, refinement, and implementation of a rigorous, standards-aligned K&ndash;8 science curriculum aligned to state standards and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) where applicable.
Ensure high-fidelity implementation of the STEMscopes K&ndash;8 curriculum across all grade levels.
Establish clear instructional frameworks that emphasize inquiry-based learning, scientific reasoning, experimentation, and real-world problem solving.
Support vertical alignment across grade levels to ensure coherence and progression of scientific knowledge and skills.
Promote integration of science with technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Data & Assessment

Lead the analysis and use of formative, interim, and summative science assessment data to monitor student growth and mastery.
Develop structured data cycles that support teachers and leaders in making instructional adjustments.
Identify trends, achievement gaps, and priority standards requiring targeted support.
Present clear, actionable data reports to senior leadership and key stakeholder groups.

Professional Learning & Coaching

Design and deliver high-impact professional development aligned to adult learning theory and research-based science instructional practices.

Legends Fellows, an AmeriCorps and Service Year Alliance program, helps students at Legends Charter School succeed. A diverse team of Legends Fellow AmeriCorps members support students, classrooms, and the whole school, helping to ensure that students receive a high-quality education that prepares them with the skills and mindset to thrive and contribute to their community.
What You'll Do
As a First Year Legends Fellow AmeriCorps member, your service will focus on coaching and mentoring elementary and/or middle school students who are struggling in school. You will help these students earn academic success, improve their attendance, learn social-emotional skills and develop positive behaviors at school. You will plan and monitor individual student progress and also work with teachers on whole-class instruction, breakout spaces, and other in-class student assistance. With your team, you will support afterschool programming and develop whole school activities to promote a positive school climate and encourage schoolwide student engagement. 
Positions are full-time (1700 hours during a 10-month term). 
Your Role and Responsibilities
As a valued member of the school community, you will share in some or all of the responsibilities listed below. If you have not done all these things, that is okay. We don't expect you to come in knowing how to do them and provide 2-4 weeks of training to support you at the beginning of the year. Plus, you will work with partner teachers and school staff every step of the way. To support academic coaching and social-emotional development for students, you will:

Work with identified students 1:1 and in small groups
Create and implement literacy and/or math-focused class content
Develop literacy and/or math skills by varying learning activities by student level, answering student questions, and encouraging assignment completion
Create and implement a behavior management system for students
Help build a safe, healthy, and supportive classroom environment
Develop social-emotional skills throughout their day, using proven strategies of learning, practicing, reflection and repetition
Provide attendance coaching, including placing calls to the homes of students to recognize performance, understand attendance issues, and assess technology needs, as applicable
Collaborate with teachers and team members to collect, record, analyze and monitor individual student progress, participating in facilitated reviews of student data collected and entered into City Year's student data system
Create an engaging classroom space in collaboration with the teacher, such as leading warm-ups and energizers, creating aspirational or instruction content-related posters and videos, etc.
Represent Legends Fellow and AmeriCorps by wearing an Equity Now-issued uniform, including the Legends Fellow and AmeriCorps logos.

Support Whole School initiatives to increase engagement with students and their families:


Support start of day and transition times, such as hallways, recess, morning greeting and end of day departures for students
Support and/or conduct extended day and virtual programming for students before, during and after school including, but not limited to, academic enrichment and intervention, homework support, recreation and student clubs, service learning, and leadership development
Provide drop-in or enrollment-based homework assistance to individual students outside of school hours in the schoolhouse or virtually
Create, support and/or co-lead events or programs that recognize and appreciate student growth and/or achievement in math, literacy, attendance, and behavior
Engage students, parents/guardians, and/or community members in education or social issues through member-led themed events at schools or on virtual platforms

Other initiatives:


Lead or participate in occasional physical service projects and school community events that engage other volunteers, which may take place during nights or weekends
Engage in remote service opportunities coordinated by the local AmeriCorps State Commission with approval from the Impact Manager (supervisor)
Create team resources such as documenting best practices, creating demonstration videos and video testimonials, creating lesson plans, and designing service projects

Note: As appropriate to the activity and at the direction of the school district, school partner, and/or Equity Now your service, training and development may be delivered in-person or through a virtual platform such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom or Google Classrooms.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
 Establishes clear goals and objectives related to the School Improvement Plan;
 Plans and prepares lessons, assignments, instructional materials;
 Establishes learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, curriculum framework, and knowledge of human growth and development;
 Prepares, administers and corrects evaluations and assessments, and records results;
 Selects and uses appropriate instructional strategies including, but not limited to, lectures, group discussions, demonstrations, modeling and multimedia teaching aids to present subject matter to students;

Responsible for organizing and overseeing school-aged students in a safe, enjoyable extended day program which meets the needs of the parents and enthuses students from kindergarten through 7th grade.

Legends EdVentures is currently seeking strong Lead and Assistant teachers to join our team. Our teachers are responsible for creating and maintaining a classroom for before and after care that adheres to the program's mission and vision. This includes, but is not limited to:
 Utilizing the many resources and curriculum to maximize the children's learning opportunities each day
 Ensuring that MSDE Office of Child Care regulations are complied with at all times
 Communicating daily with parents about their children and their children's academic progress
 Adhering to the daily schedule and following the prescribed curriculum
 Presenting a professional demeanor at all times
 Maintaining a clean and organized classroom that provides a healthy and safe environment for our children
 Before Care Hours: M-F, 7:00 am  9:00 am After Care Hours: M-F, 3:15 pm  6:15 pm

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
 Plan and conduct daily activities and study time for students with homework;
 Assist students with homework;
 Obtain, prepare and distribute snack at appropriate time, and clean area when finished;
 Keep an accurate sign in/out sheet in order to account for the students at all times;
 Aid the Director in ensuring the after-school program is in compliance with the Maryland Regulations, regarding childcare;
 Assist the Director in maintaining accurate paperwork for students and staff;
 Report discipline problems to the Director or Assistant Director and aid in resolution;
 Be knowledgeable and carry out duties as assigned in the event of an emergency;
 Communicate emergency evacuation / fire procedures to program participants;
 Maintain inventory of supplies, games, snacks, and beverages;
 Maintain credit hours of continuing education as required by the Maryland State Certification; and
 Perform other duties as assigned by the Director. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
 Eligible to qualify as a Lead Teacher through the State of Maryland OCC
 High school diploma or equivalent
 Prior experience working with school-aged children
 Able to communicate clearly and effectively with parents, children and peers.
 Strong written and spoken language skills.  Knowledge of typical development in School Age Children.
 CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

Disqualifying Factors: The Program may not employ an individual who has received a conviction, probation before judgment disposition, a not criminally responsible disposition, or a pending charge for the commission or attempted commission of:
1. A crime involving:
a. A child;
b. Cruelty to animals;
c. Domestic Violence; or
d. A weapons or firearms violation of federal or state laws;
2. A sex offense;
3. A violent crime classified as a felony;
4. Abduction or kidnapping;
5. Abuse of a child or adult;
6. Confinement of an unattended child;
7. Manufacturing, distributing, or dispensing a controlled dangerous substance;
8. Perjury
9. Pornography
10. Possession with intent to manufacture, distribute, or dispense a controlled dangerous
11. substance; or
12. Reckless endangerment

Physical Demands and Work Environment
 Assist in the daily set up and clean-up of the program area, which includes but is not limited to, putting all program supplies and equipment away, making sure all food items are wrapped and put away and wiping down the tables and chairs.
 Periodically check refrigerator and remove old or unwanted items.
 Close and lock all closets at the end of each day.
 Change soiled clothes as needed.
 Ability to get on the floor to participate and supervise activities.
 Must be able to go outside, move about all areas of the campus and accompany participants on field trips.
 Lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
