About Barrier Free Living (BFL)
Barrier Free Living (BFL) is dedicated to helping New Yorkers with disabilities live independently in the community. Through its various programs, BFL provides a broad range of residential and nonresidential services to disabled survivors of domestic violence, transitional shelter to the disabled homeless, and outreach to physically disabled individuals with mental health and/or chemical addiction issues. Services include case management; housing placements; independent living skills training; occupational therapy; short and long-term individual counseling; advocacy within the medical, mental health, child welfare, law enforcement, and criminal justice systems; and referrals to outside services.
About Freedom Village
Freedom Village is a 74-unit permanent supportive housing residence operated by BFL. Located in Manhattan's Lower East Side, the program serves survivors of domestic violence with disabilities and frail elderly individuals (55+), offering a fully accessible and trauma-informed environment. Residents receive comprehensive on-site services including case management, counseling, and occupational therapy to promote safety, healing, and long-term stability.
Role Summary
The Senior Social Worker leads and supervises the social services department at Freedom Village, a permanent supportive housing program serving survivors of domestic violence, individuals with disabilities, frail elderly adults, and families exiting homelessness. This role provides advanced clinical support and direct trauma-informed services to tenants with complex needs. The Senior Social Worker offers clinical supervision to staff and interns and plays a key role in the coordination and delivery of supportive services across the program. This position ensures the provision of high-quality, tenant-centered care that promotes housing stability, emotional well-being, and independence through a harm reduction, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approach.
Responsibilities

Provide clinical supervision and guidance to clinical staff, case managers, and/or interns;

Lead case conferences and ensure that interventions reflect best practices and program values;

Support staff development through modeling trauma-informed care, reflective supervision, and strengths-based leadership;

Provide individual and family-based counseling, crisis intervention, and clinical support to tenants with complex trauma histories, including the frail elderly, survivors of violence, and individuals with disabilities;

Conduct psychosocial assessments, develop individualized service plans, and monitor progress toward goals;

Address a wide range of tenant concerns including mental health, substance use, aging-related issues, parenting, and interpersonal conflict;

Coordinate with external providers including medical, psychiatric, and aging services to support continuity of care.

Advocate for tenant access to benefits and services such as Medicaid, SNAP, home care, senior services, and mental health or substance use treatment;

Assist tenants in navigating public systems (e.g., HRA, ACS, DOE, APS, housing court);

Facilitate groups focused on aging, coping skills, parenting, trauma recovery, and wellness;

Partner with property management to resolve lease violations and housing-related concerns, while supporting tenant stability and rights;

Maintain schedule of clinical staff, including on-call rotation;

Perform crisis intervention with staff & tenants as needed;

Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the agency's electronic case management system;

Ensure service delivery is aligned with contractual, regulatory, and ethical standards;

Support preparation for audits, reporting, and data tracking related to service outcomes and tenant progress.

Administrative duties, as needed;

Alternate on-call responsibility; and
-
In the absence of the Program Director, responsible for oversight of the program.
Qualifications

Masters Degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling or related field;

Minimum 5 years of post Masters experience, preferably working with victims of domestic violence and/or people with disabilities or equivalent experience;

Preferred prior supervisory experience;

Ability to supervise master level students and interns;

Ability to work in fast paced environment;

Domestic Violence experience preferred;

Child welfare experience preferred;

Excellent conflict resolution skills;

Open to working with diverse populations;

Bilingual (Spanish or ASL speaking) preferred.
