JOB SUMMARY

The Settlements Lead is responsible for overseeing the accurate and timely processing of financial transactions related to midstream activities, including natural gas purchases, sales gathering, plant settlements, storage, and imbalances. This role ensures accurate settlement with counter parties, reconciles accounts, and supports month-end close activities. The ideal candidate brings strong energy industry experience, particularly in midstream operations, and possesses deep knowledge of natural gas scheduling, contracts, and revenue recognition.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Typical job responsibilities of the Settlements Lead include:
  • Oversee the monthly settlement process for midstream activities including physical gas purchase and sales deals and imbalances.
  • Oversee the accounting treatment of complex commercial transactions including structured deals, gathering and purchase agreements, and storage deals. Reconcile gathering and plant statements and counter parties' invoices against internal records and scheduled volumes.
  • Resolve disputes related to pricing, quantities, contracts, or imbalances by working closely with scheduling, contracts, and commercial teams.
  • Reconcile monthly volumes and balance the upstream system.
  • Reconcile sales and gathering statements and prepare revenue summary package for upstream revenue accounting.
  • Ensure timely issuance of invoices and processing of payments for all counterparties, including marketers, midstream service providers, utilities, and pipeline operators.
  • Lead the monthly and quarterly close processes for trading and transportation-related accounts, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations.
  • Ensure all revenue and expense transactions are accurately captured and recorded in accordance with GAAP and company policy.
  • Prepare detailed variance analyses and financial reports for management and external auditors.
  • Maintain strong documentation to support internal controls and compliance with SOX and regulatory audits.
  • Develop and implement process improvements and automation initiatives to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and scalability of settlement and accounting functions.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for the Gas Plant and ERP systems related to natural gas accounting and settlements.
  • Ensure compliance with tax regulations and internal financial policies.
  • Prepare and support audit requests from internal and external auditors, including walkthroughs and documentation.
  • Support risk management efforts by ensuring proper controls and segregation of duties are in place.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Deep understanding of natural gas transportation, storage, gathering, plant settlements, contracts and revenue recognition
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, Texas RRC, and other regulatory frameworks affecting the energy industry.
  • Advanced Excel and analytical skills; ability to manage and interpret large data sets.
  • Proven ability to manage complex reconciliations and resolve discrepancies across multiple counterparties and systems.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and commitment to process integrity
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to work across departments and levels.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred, or 10 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience in the energy sector, preferably in natural gas marketing, gathering & plant settlements, or midstream operations.

 

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS

  • CPA or CMA candidate a plus

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position is located at BKV’s Denver or Fort Worth office. 
  • An indoor working environment that requires the ability to perform repetitive motions and operate standard office equipment.
  • May occasionally be exposed to distracting noise while sharing office space with others.
  • Some travel up to 10% may be required.
