Your New Job 

Job Summary:

The Traffic Control Technician is responsible for setting up and maintaining safe work zones by directing traffic, placing signage, cones, and barriers, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This role is essential for the safety of workers, motorists, and pedestrians in and around construction and maintenance zones.

Job Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):

  • Set up, monitor, and remove temporary traffic control setups such as cones, signs, barricades, and arrow boards.
  • Direct traffic using signs, hand signals, and flagging devices.
  • Ensure traffic flow is managed safely around construction or maintenance zones.
  • Follow and implement traffic control plans (TCPs) as directed by supervisors or engineers.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the work zone to ensure compliance with safety standards and correct setup.
  • Report incidents, accidents, or unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Maintain communication with work crews and emergency personnel as needed.
  • Operate traffic control devices, such as automated flagger assistance devices (AFADs), when applicable.
  • Perform basic maintenance of equipment and tools.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED (preferred).
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Certification as a Traffic Control Technician (TCT) or Flagger (e.g., ATSSA, NSC, or state-specific).
  • Ability to stand for long periods and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong understanding of road safety regulations and signage standards.
  • Good communication and situational awareness.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience in construction, roadwork, or traffic management.
  • Ability to read and interpret traffic control plans and safety diagrams.
  • Familiarity with local Department of Transportation (DOT) standards and guidelines.
  • Physical strength to lift and place traffic equipment.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and reach.
  • Ability to lift, push, and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including working at heights, in confined spaces, and on uneven terrain.
  • Use of hands and arms for handling tools, equipment, and controls.
  • Visual and auditory acuity required to operate equipment and ensure safety in field environments.
  • May involve long periods of driving between job sites.

Work Environment:

  • Work is primarily performed outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and potentially hazardous materials and environments.
  • May work near moving mechanical parts or in high-traffic areas.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, reflective vests, and steel-toed boots.
  • Irregular hours, overtime, and on-call availability may be required based on operational needs.
