    Role Summary

    As a Clinical Nurse II in Wound Care at Howard University Hospital — the nation’s only teaching hospital on the campus of a historically Black university and a designated DC Level 1 Trauma Center — you will deliver skilled, patient-centered care to patients at risk of or living with complex wound care needs. Reporting to the Nurse Manager, you will assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate care at the bedside, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to achieve safe, effective outcomes.

    What You’ll Do

    • Assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate patient care at the bedside; identify patient care requirements by establishing personal rapport with patients, families, and friends; establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support
    • Maintain patient confidence and protect operations by keeping information confidential in adherence with HIPAA Privacy policies and procedures
    • Document patient care and outcomes in the electronic health record; maintain continuity among nursing teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs
    • Delegate tasks to non-licensed personnel and assistants
    • Participate in unit performance improvement programs through ongoing design, assessment, measurement, and improvement activities; participate in nursing and unit-based committees such as education, engagement, and practice
    • Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled-substance regulations
    • Serve in the role of charge nurse with approval by the Nurse Manager
    • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies
    • Ensure operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining equipment inventories, and evaluating new equipment and techniques
    • Assume other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area

    Required Qualifications

    • Nursing degree from an accredited school of nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
    • Two (2) or more years of clinical nursing experience upon hire, OR completion of HUH’s Professional Nurses Clinical Advancement Program (PNCAP) and eighteen (18) months of employment at HUH
    • Current, active RN license in the District of Columbia
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) required
    • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to evaluate patient care
    • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care
    • Able to work in a stressful environment with multiple demands and respond appropriately; resolve conflicts effectively, prioritize tasks, respond to emergencies, and react calmly
    • Awareness of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment; able to respond to alarms, codes, telephones, and overhead pages
    • Able to read charts, labels, documentation, policies, and procedures; able to communicate with staff, visitors, patients, and physicians in clear and concise English
    • Knowledge of and participation in quality, patient experience, and professional development initiatives

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
    • Wound Care Nurse certification
    • Experience with Soarian Clinicals or a comparable electronic health record

    Pay & Schedule

    This position is covered under the DC Nurses Association (DCNA) collective bargaining agreement. Base pay range: $37.89–$63.36/hr, commensurate with experience and qualifications per the DCNA wage scale.
