ROLE SUMMARY
Howard University Hospital is seeking a Medical Technologist Generalist I to join our Department of Pathology. In this role, you will perform routine and complex clinical diagnostic testing across Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, and Microbiology (Bacteriology, Serology, Virology, Mycology, and Mycobacteriology), reporting accurate and timely results that directly guide patient care decisions throughout the hospital. WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Perform patient and Quality Control (QC) testing in assigned laboratory areas, reporting results in accordance with departmental policy and maintaining an error rate consistent with established departmental standards.
- Report and document critical and corrected values according to medical laboratory policy.
- Apply clinical correlation of current laboratory results with other known patient test results during result verification, including delta checks, in adherence with department procedure.
- Prioritize and manage workload to meet or exceed established Turn-Around-Times (TATs).
- Maintain proper inventories, use supplies and reagents correctly, communicate inventory needs promptly, and restock workstations to maintain consistent workflow.
- Receive, store, and verify reagents for quality prior to use; use and dispose of reagents and supplies per manufacturer instructions, procedural instructions, and departmental safety guidelines.
- Monitor equipment performance, diagnose malfunctions, and make repairs or initiate service requests; perform and document routine equipment maintenance.
- Recognize, troubleshoot, resolve, and document instrument malfunctions in a timely manner, contacting manufacturer technical service as needed to maintain workflow and schedule repairs.
- Report quality issues to a supervisor in a timely manner.
- Investigate, document, and resolve problems or complaints; handle customer concerns professionally and in strict adherence to the department's customer service policy, escalating unresolved issues to the appropriate Assistant Laboratory Manager.
- Actively participate in laboratory preparation for inspections by the College of American Pathologists, the Food and Drug Administration, the District of Columbia Department of Health, the American Association of Blood Banks, and The Joint Commission, among others.
- Promote adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics, and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct; complete annual and periodic mandatory compliance and HIPAA Privacy training; and maintain the confidentiality of patients, families, and staff.
- Assume other related duties and responsibilities appropriate to the position and area as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, or a Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or a related science.
- Must obtain registry with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as MT or H/C, or an equivalent registry, within one (1) year of hire.
- Ability to accurately perform testing procedures and proficiency in interpreting and evaluating laboratory results.
- Ability to handle specimens properly.
- Demonstrated knowledge of quality, safety, and compliance programs.
- Knowledge of biohazard and chemical risks and the precautions required to avoid contamination.
- Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
- Competence in both oral and written English.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective, harmonious working relationships with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.
- Sufficient sight (including color discrimination), manual dexterity, and mobility to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Physical requirements include frequent walking and standing; occasional sitting, bending, and squatting; and occasional lifting and carrying of up to 35 lbs (and over 35 lbs with the use of equipment).
- Availability to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed to support 24/7 laboratory operations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science.
- Prior clinical laboratory experience.
- Current ASCP (MT), (H/C), or equivalent registry at the time of hire.
- Generalist bench experience across multiple disciplines (Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology).

POSITION DETAILS
Department Pathology / Clinical Laboratory Reports To Assistant Manager, Clinical Laboratory FLSA Status Non-Exempt Bargaining Unit Local 2094 — Grade 2094-24 Schedule Monday - Friday 8 am - 4:30 pm Weekend Requirement Every other weekend PAY
This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between Howard University Hospital and Local 2094. Compensation is set in accordance with the Local 2094 wage scale for Grade 2094-24. The hourly base pay range for this position is $30.45 – $48.74. Placement within the range is determined by the applicable CBA provisions, including relevant experience and credentials. Shift differentials and premium pay may apply in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
