PURPOSE:
Summarize briefly the major function and purpose of the position.
Plans, conducts and directs the most complex Engineering projects. Leads the completion/resolution of a variety of technically difficult problems and/or projects.
ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
What are the minimum qualifications an employee must have in order to perform the duties of the position? (I.e. educational requirements, licenses, certification, work experience, training etc.)
BS Degree in Engineering. Twelve+ years relevant experience or MS degree with ten+ years experience. PhD with eight+ years.
Expert knowledge of multiple technologies, products and applications. Advanced knowledge of competing and alternative technologies.
Demonstrated innovative skills to research and create new products/processes using advanced laws, theorems and broad industry knowledge. Recognized as a technical leader among internal and external peers.
Broad understanding of division?s businesses and internal and external factors affecting business.
Good organization and project planning skills. Proven leadership ability. Demonstrates mastery in mentoring, creative thinking and project planning.
Demonstrated effective customer presentation skills.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
What additional training will an employee require to continue to perform the duties of the position?
Global Work Instructions, Houston Operating Procedures, START Safety Program, TCE Systems.
Takes required FMC training courses as outlined in the Engineering Training Assessment Plan.
RELATIONSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:
Indicate positions that report directly to this position. Number of direct / indirect reports.
No direct reports, but consistently functions as a technical team leader or a significant contributor to a major complex problem and/or project.
Indicate internal/external contacts and purpose of contacts.

Sponsors new project technologies and solicits understanding and support of line managers for major projects.
Has strong relationships with major customers to influence purchase decisions made by customer upper management. Viewed by sales department as key in convincing customer decision-makers of the value of product offerings.
Called upon consistently for external technical advice, speaking engagements.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITY:
Indicate budget/revenue responsibility.
Ensures that development costs, project costs and schedules are met.
Explain the degree of supervision/guidance, procedures/ processes used, judgement, creativity, planning & resourcefulness needed to do the job.
Receives direction from manager to set broad objectives, interpret policy issues, develop new concepts and resolve unusual problems.
Uses independent judgement consistently and clearly demonstrates creativity and innovation in finding solutions and alternatives.
Develops unique solutions for complex technical problems that may include the design of new systems, utilization of new technology, or the development of solutions having few or no precedents.

Potential errors may have major impact on customer relationships, future business, and holdup of production, major expenditures for equipment, material or production.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Describe general working conditions (i.e. noise level, temperature, around heavy machinery)
Office environment. Possible exposure to hazards such as noise, heavy equipment, temperature extremes, chemicals, etc. while working in Engineering laboratory, assembly areas and field service applications.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Describe amount & frequency of physical requirements of the position (i.e. lifting, pushing, climbing)
Spends 80% of time sitting and operating a computer or workstation. Spends 20% of time lifting, pushing, and walking. Some climbing.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:

E/N Duties and Responsibilities
E Consistently leads professionals and/or technicians on a project basis. Ensures that project members understand business goals and creates energy and action toward those goals. Encourages and empowers others to achieve.
E Creates, reviews and approves designs, drawings, DBI?s (database information), specifications, etc. of existing or new technology or applications. Ensures that assignments meet standards and performance requirements within area of expertise.
E Familiar with CAD/CAM and database systems and facilities to review/approve layouts, analyze designs, evaluate equipment systems and generate new equipment designs.
E Reviews/approves documentation, information and communications such as ECN (Engineering Change Notices), DBI (Data Base Information) and engineering specifications and ensures conformance to all policies and procedures related to engineering functions, labor reporting and systems reporting.
E Finds creative solutions to multi-faceted and/or time sensitive, complex problems. Identifies and utilizes available technical resources throughout FMC and outside institutions.
E Consults with other departments on equipment designs and questions. Anticipates potential problems and proactively solves complex problems through creative thinking, using internal and external resources.
E Prepares technical data and papers for sales personnel, customers and publications. Makes presentations to customer management groups.
E Teaches / coaches problem solving, creative thinking and project planning skills to less experienced staff. Assists with the development of new professionals.
E Sets objectives for projects. Defines project schedule. Ensures costs and schedules are met.
E Accepts ownership of conceptual designs and regularly sponsors projects to higher management.
E Writes departmental process procedures and policies as required.
E Writes and delivers technical papers for publication. Gives technical advice and participates in external speaking engagements.
N Actively increases industry knowledge base through technical publications, forums, committee participation, trade shows, etc.
