Title: Behavior Support Team Staff (BST)
Reports to: Dean of Student Services
Department: KEC School
Location: 5350 Machado Road, Culver City, CA
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Program Hours: 32 + hours per week; schedule is determined by program needs and assigned by the Supervisor. Position is based on a school-year calendar that may change each year and includes an unpaid summer recess.
Supervisory Responsibility for Staff: NONE
Position Summary
Provide for the care, welfare, safety, and security of students (K-12th grade) with varying learning, behavioral, emotional, and intellectual disabilities. Use Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) techniques as approved to de-escalate crisis situations. Support school staff by implementing student goals and objectives as they pertain to problem-solving and behavior, and modeling professional behavior for students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· When necessary, BSS staff will physically escort or contain a student in crisis, implementing approved Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) as needed. This role intervenes when Teacher’s, Teacher’s Assistants and Adult Assistants, and other school staff need assistance to contain or redirect a student.
· Using the Behavior Routing Slips, document each student's activities and ensure documentation is placed in the appropriate file. Complete monthly logs and provide them to administrative leadership monthly.
· Accurately document Behavioral/Social-Emotional activities of students and update the teacher on student information, behavioral changes, and other pertinent information.
· Support the teacher's case management for assigned students as it pertains to preparation for IEP meetings, parent conferences, and matriculation.
· Maintains a zone and or zones within the school to direct or supervise students to assigned classrooms or programs
· Support the classroom team in the implementation of the student’s goals and objectives, especially as they pertain to problem-solving and behavior.
· Assist in supervising before and after school and during nutrition and lunch periods.
· When necessary, BSS staff will transport students home during emergencies (i.e., illness, fighting on the bus or during school, etc.) if parents or other school staff members are not available.
· Attend and participate in ECF/Kayne Eras in-service training sessions, staff meetings, weekly core and/or team meetings, programs, and activities.
Other Duties
· Model appropriate behavior and dress and maintain boundaries. Always interact with students and staff professionally.
· Comply with ECF’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Ensure safe use and operation of tools and/or equipment.
· Comply with ECF policies and procedures, including mandated reporting requirements. Follow ECF guidelines for reporting medical emergencies, suspected abuse or neglect and unusual incidents to appropriate counseling and/or supervisory staff.
· Regular, reliable attendance.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education/Licenses/Certifications: High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience: One year working with individuals with learning, behavioral, emotional and/or developmental disabilities in a direct service capacity.
Knowledge/Abilities/Skills:
· Ability to implement NCI, first aid and CPR.
· Ability to write accurate, descriptive, and meaningful documentation/case notes.
· Ability to follow instructions.
· Ability to communicate effectively with students who are high risk, have special needs, or have a developmental disability.
· Ability to follow directions.
· Ability to deal appropriately with sensitive and confidential information.
Requirements
· Driving is an essential function of this position. Proof of valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, evidence of state-mandated car insurance, and insurable driving record are required. While driving for work, should a need arise, the employee’s insurance is deemed primary and ECF’s coverage is secondary.
· Pass a DOJ background investigation.
· Provide evidence of a negative TB test initially and every three years thereafter.
· Obtain and maintain NCI, First Aid, and CPR certification.
Work Environment
This is a school environment for students (K-12th grade) who have varying degrees of learning, behavioral, emotional, and developmental disabilities. Work may be performed in any area of the school, classroom, or outdoors. Indoor temperatures are comfortable; outdoor temperatures will vary. The environment may include frequent interruptions, loud noise, odors, and drafts. Employees will encounter students who are in crisis, exhibiting emotional/psychological behaviors, or behaving aggressively.

· Require the use of hands to produce records and/or documentation in manual or electronic format. Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen.
· Hearing and giving speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
· Regularly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds.
· With assistance, physically contain/restrain a student using 25 – 50 lbs of force.
