The Opportunity
An Agency of the City of New York seeks experienced litigators to defend cases under New York’s Adult Survivors Act (AVA) and Child Victims Act (CVA). This is a long-term, temporary engagement with the potential for permanent employment. The position is onsite in lower Manhattan with an hourly rate of $35 - $50, plus benefits.
Primary Duties
The successful candidates will be assigned to the Tort Division which defends the City of New York in a broad range of cases, including allegations of institutional abuse under the AVA and CVA. Regular court appearances are required to attend discovery or other status conferences and argue motions. Attorneys take and defend depositions, request and exchange discovery, engage in settlement negotiations, and write and argue substantive and procedural motions. In addition to substantive, pre-trial responsibilities, first and second chair trial duties are expected. Additional duties include the following:
- Interviews and settlement discussions with abuse victims
- Defend civil litigation matters through trial
- Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, reports, and legal opinions
- Manage discovery, depositions, expert selection, and trial preparation
- Develop and execute case strategy
- Provide timely status updates, analysis, and recommendations to claims personnel
- Conduct legal research and report on relevant statutory and case law developments
Requirements
- Minimum of 2+ years of New York litigation experience
- Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school
- Active, good-standing member of the New York Bar
- Strong pre-trial, research, writing, and client communication skills
- Knowledge of New York laws, courts, and procedures
- Proficiency with legal research tools and Microsoft Office
- New York’s Adult Survivors Act (AVA) and Child Victims Act (CVA), a plus
