Director of Technical Operations
Colorado Springs, CO
Must be a U.S. Citizen, eligible for a government clearance
@Orchard LLC is managing a search for a strategic Director of Technical Operations to work at the intersection of high-stakes engineering and scalable operational excellence. You will be the architect of our client’s core engineering facility’s operational framework, ensuring that our infrastructure is not just functional, but resilient, predictive, and world-class. You will be further responsible for customer success through the management of a team of Field Engineers supporting our clients and ensuring performance of the world’s only EMP-hardened, resilient 5G communications infrastructure. Our client delivers edge compute, on the customer prim fully integrated with private networks that ensure continuity of operations in the most extreme environments. Whether stationary or on the move, their security-first design guarantees that mission-critical information remains protected when it matters most.
Position Overview
As the Director of Technical Operations, you will ensure the sustainability of solutions through performance optimization at our Colorado Springs Headquarters and through the management and development of a team of local Field Engineers tasked with onsite operations and maintenance of deployed nodes. You will lead the charge in transforming complex engineering requirements into repeatable, scalable, and highly efficient operational realities. Based on site in Colorado Springs, you will spearhead the development of a data-driven culture focused on predictive analytics and rapid incident response.
Key Responsibilities
- Customer Success: Lead a team of Field Engineers responsible for ensuring no downtime for our deployed systems at customer locations. This involves the training and development of field personnel, performance oversight, and management against goals. When it comes to deployed systems performance, the buck stops with you.
- Operational Strategy & Roadmap: Develop and execute a comprehensive roadmap for the core engineering facility, focusing on efficiency, scalability, and "gold standard" quality systems.
- Process Standardization: Design and implement standardized "Run-Books," escalation matrices, and incident response protocols to drastically reduce Mean Time to Resolution (MTTR) and mitigate customer-impact incidents.
- Predictive Analytics: Champion the use of data to move from reactive to proactive operations. Build performance dashboards and predictive models to forecast system bottlenecks and potential failures.
- Quality & Continuous Improvement: Apply methodologies to eliminate waste in technical workflows and ensure repeatable, high-quality outcomes, both at Headquarters and for the field team.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Act as the bridge between core engineering teams and customer-facing operations, ensuring facility capabilities align with product evolution and client SLAs.
Candidate Requirements
Core Qualifications
- Location: Must live (or be willing to relocate to) Colorado Springs, CO, for 100% onsite work, and travel to customer locations nationwide, as needed.
- Engineering Management: 10+ years in technical operations, infrastructure management, and engineering leadership, with a proven track record of managing 24x7 mission-critical environments.
- Field Teams: Proven experience building and managing a deployed team of Field Engineers, including establishing standards, metrics, and performance measures to ensure consistency and excellence in execution nationwide.
- Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead diverse technical teams through high-pressure incident response and long-term infrastructure scaling.
Technical & Professional Credentials
- Certifications: PMP (Project Management Professional) and Six Sigma (Green or Black Belt) are highly preferred.
- Systems Expertise: Deep understanding of ITIL frameworks and automated incident management systems. Familiarity with 5G communications infrastructure, High Performance Edge Compute, Agentic AI systems, Field System Deployment, Installation, and Optimization.
- Data Literacy: Proficiency in developing and interpreting KPIs and predictive analytics to drive operational decisions.
Defining Capabilities;
- You are a "builder" who isn't satisfied with the status quo.
- You enjoy the challenge of taking a complex, high-tech environment and bringing order to it through rigorous process and data.
- You lead by example, remain calm under fire during outages, and are obsessed with reducing cycle times.
The anticipated salary range is $160,000 - $220,000 plus bonus. The compensation package is determined by experience and qualifications. Our client offers a competitive benefits package to all staff members.
